One of the fun parts of being an author is the opportunity to interact with other authors – to find out about the exciting stories that keep them awake at night, hear how they treat the writing process, and celebrate their successes with them.
This week, I’m pleased to have the opportunity to do all three here on my blog. Today’s Savvy Saturday post features an interview with indie author Anna del C. Dye, who is celebrating the release of her new YA fantasy novel, The Roilden Stones of Elf Mountains. Anna is originally from Valparaiso, Chile, and thus brings a unique perspective to her works of fantasy.
The Roilden Stones of Elf Mountain is officially described as “the long awaited prequel, and final installment in Anna del C.’s Elf series. Discover the Elfs, an eternal race who chose to live in a world of woes away from their motherland. Love them, feel their pain and their happiness in a land that will test the core of their beliefs and bravery. Written in the genre of The Lord of the Rings and the Shannara series, The Roilden Stones of Elf Mountain comes alive with battles, heroism, action and romance.”
With that introduction, here’s my exclusive interview with Anna. Read on, and enjoy!
What most excites you about being a novelist?
All the places I get to write about and the characters that will live in those places. The freedom to be a “fantasy god” is exhilarating.
What is one facet of your world that is different from ours? How does this impact the lives, goals, and dreams of your characters?
The Elfs (yes, I do spell it with “fs” as the plural) are almost perfect in many ways. They are trustworthy, just, respectful of all things alive, and loving, while mankind in their world is pretty much the opposite to them. Men are dirty, loud, killers and have no respect for women or the land they live on.
To which of your characters do you relate the most? Why?
Adren, the main character in The Silent Warrior Trilogy. She is the Princess of Menarm…a mankind kingdom. She loses everything when her kingdom is destroyed, yet she raises above all to find happiness at the end.
I left my country to marry my husband here in USA and lost everyone for 17 years. I had to learn new customs and a language that was not easy. Still, thirty-six years later I too arose above all obstacles to get where we are now.
What drove you to write this particular story?
The Roilden Stones of Elf Mountain came to me after reading the Lord of the Rings and way before the movies came out. It took over my head and the rest is history.
Which do you prefer – to plot out your story before you start to write, or to write and see how your story evolves?
It comes usually in a sequence in my head and I start writing and see where it takes me. Once I plotted to kill a warrior, but when I got to that part I give him a reason to stay alive. Characters talk to you and it is their story not yours, that you are telling.
What are three things you hope readers will get out of your novel?
Hope, and that you should never sell yourself for too little. We are responsible for our own happiness and if you don’t cheer for yourself, who will? Aim high and go for it. Not even the sky is the limit… keep going until you find your potential.
What is this book’s target market – what sets apart the readers that you think will most enjoy your book?
The markets is Young Adult, but many of my readers are adults. They enjoy the clean twists, mysteries, wars and romance the best.
What are your current/future writing plans?
By March 2014, I plan to re-launch the Silent Warrior Trilogy through Amazon. I will also re-launch The Curse of the Elfs with them. Then I will call my Elf Series done. Next year I will focus my writing to YA Medieval Romance. I will launch “Once Upon Two Kingdoms” or “A Kingdom by the Sea’ as the first book in my Princess Series. Another book will be published every year from then on.
